Red Sox Pitcher To Have Tommy John Surgery, Ending 2024 Season

Boston will have one less depth option next season

The Boston Red Sox's pitching struggles continue into the offseason.

One of the major storylines with the 2023 Red Sox was their lack of pitching, whether it was due to injury or depth. This lack of weaponry from the mound has led to an improved pitching staff being at the top of Boston's list of offseason needs, that list may have just got longer.

"Red Sox pitching prospect Taylor Broadway underwent Tommy John surgery in October and will miss the 2024 season." Beyond The Monster's Andrew Parker reported Monday.

Broadway posted a 5.65 ERA with a 32-to-16 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .283 batting average against and a 1.55 WHIP in 36 2/3 innings pitched between Triple-A Worcester and Double-A Portland.

The 26-year-old has struggled in the minor leagues and has been a depth player at best. This will be a devastating blow for Broadway but shouldn't affect the farm system's pitching staff too much. Broadway had the physical tools to develop into a depth option for the Red Sox this season but that will have to be put on hold.

Broadway was sent to Boston from the Chicago White Sox prior to the 2022 trade deadline. The Red Sox sent Jake Diekman to Chicago for Reese McGuire and a player to be named later, who eventually turned into Broadway.
