Should Red Sox Take Chance On Free Agent Former All-Star Infielder To Improve Depth?

The Boston Red Sox have left no stone unturned so far this offseason.

After finishing 78-84 in 2022, the Red Sox certainly had plenty of holes to fill on the roster. The offseason already has been eventful, but one move the team could consider to bolster its infield depth would be signing former Kansas City Royal and Cincinnati Red Mike Moustakas.

The three-time All-Star is a free agent after being released by the Reds on Thursday and although he likely wouldn't be a starter for Boston, could be a solid veteran depth piece with a low cost.

Boston reportedly has been considering trading first baseman Bobby Dalbec so if the team were to do so it would open up the backup spot which could be filled effortlessly by Moustakas.

Boston top prospect Triston Casas is primed to be the team's starting first baseman for 2023 and well into the future, but to have a veteran and champion like Moustakas on the bench to help guide Casas wouldn't be a negative option in the slightest.

Moustakas has actually played more third base in his career than first base and could provide solid depth for Rafael Devers if the team ever wanted to use the young slugger as their designated hitter. Boston already has Justin Turner on the roster after inking the former Los Angeles Dodger to a deal earlier this offseason and Moustakas would fit a similar role of providing a veteran presence although Moustakas would more of a bench player.

The 34-year-old isn't what he once was, but if Boston were to take a chance, it wouldn't need him to be. Boston is pretty set at both first and third base so Moustakas could provide some depth and help when needed.
