Red-Hot Red Sox Prospect’s Development Stunted By Injury After Torrid Stretch

The severity of the shortstop's injury is unknown

One of the Boston Red Sox's most promising prospects has been on a tear this season as he continues to supplant himself among the top players in the organization. Unfortunately, the 20-year-old talent will spend some time on the shelf.

Greenville Drive middle infielder Brainer Bonaci was placed on the seven-day injured list according to the Major League Baseball transaction log Tuesday afternoon.

The shortstop signed with the Red Sox as an international free agent in 2018 and is currently the No. 16 prospect in the Red Sox's farm system according to MLB Pipeline this season.

Bonaci is hitting .340 with 12 extra-base hits including three home runs, 19 RBIs and a .922 OPS in 26 games for High-A Greenville this season.

The right-hander already spent some time on the injured list earlier in the year and was also limited by Marcelo Mayer's presence on the roster. Bonaci was bouncing around in the infield with an occasional outfield performance scattered around every few games when Mayer was in town.

When Boston's top prospect was elevated to the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, it was time for Bonaci to shine as the full-time shortstop for the Drive. Right when the young stud was ready to assume his increased workload, he went down.

As for now, the only information released about his injury is that it occurred while rounding the bases. It appeared to be his hamstring while watching it live but there has not been any official word on the diagnosis.
