Red Sox Rob Two Rays’ Homers In Same Game After Defensive Critiques

Monday nights loss produced two highlight reel snags.

The Boston Red Sox have taken heaps of blame for their lackluster defensive play as of late.

After Red Sox manager Alex Cora came down hard on his club, a pair of outfielders decided to take matters into their own hands.

Although the Red Sox lost the final game of the four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Monday, fans were treated to back-to-back highlights in the second and third inning. The loss was the third in a row after claiming the first game of the series but it started off promising.

Kiké Hernández took center field for just the seventh time this season, with his last showing at the position dating back to April 22. The move to center field was unfortunately only temporary, as Adam Duvall’s return Friday from a fractured wrist will put him back to the infield.

Hernández has been struggling at shortstop this season, leading Major League Baseball in errors with 13. He took over the position for Trevor Story who underwent elbow surgery over the offseason. When Story returns,

Monday afternoon’s snag was the fourth of Hernández’s career and the first of the night for the Red Sox. The second came from right fielder Alex Verdugo who logged the second robbery of his career.

The robberies were the 31st and 32nd in the MLB this season, just an inning apart. Although there’s been a struggle defensively for the Red Sox this season, hopefully, these highlights could be a much-needed spark to wake up the defense.
