Cincinnati Reds Need to Add Viable Major League Talent to the End of Bench

The Reds could upgrade a key area of their roster.

Matt McLain’s oblique pull has underscored a need for the Cincinnati Reds. While the roster is able to withstand McLain’s absence, it will put a strain on the outfield depth.

The Reds added quite a bit of depth on the pitching side, but remain vulnerable in the outfield. Currently, one of the more hotly contested roster spots is the final spot on the bench.

It’s clear that the player who wins that spot needs to be able to play center field. Jose Barrero and Stuart Fairchild would seem to have the leg up in that case.

Should the Reds limit themselves to in-house candidates?

The Reds would be better off looking at free agent options or leaving open the possibility of making a waiver claim. Barrero has upside but has more questions than answers about his game. Fairchild has shown to be slightly below league average at the plate and serviceable in the field.

Michael A. Taylor would be a good signing. Taylor is two years removed from winning a gold glove. He isn’t the best hitter, but he will be a sure glove. The Reds reportedly expressed interested in him in December.

Even if there is a waiver claim to be made, Nick Krall should explore it.

As it currently stands, the Reds have questions, not answers, at the 26th roster spot.

Should McLain miss some of the beginning of the season, the Reds will be forced to employ two of the four possible “last men on the bench.” That means they will go into Opening Day with two big questions on their roster. A move should be made to assure the roster remains strong, even if they get bit by the injury bug.
