SI's Max Goodman and Matt Martell joined Robin Lundberg to preview this year's MLB Draft. The MLB and MLBPA have not yet reached an official decision as to when and how this season will begin, but this year's draft is still happening virtually on Wednesday night.

Video Transcript:

Robin Lundberg: There may not be an MLB season at the moment, but there is a draft. For more on that, I'm joined by our Matt Martell and Max Goodman of Inside the Pinstripes. Matt, I want to start with you. If there are any needs across the board in the major leagues right now. Are there any that would make the biggest difference if they were met?

Matt Martell: I think the Padres, they pick at number eight, in the first round and they have a good young core of players in the majors right now. Some good prospects on the way who should make it to the big leagues in 2020, 2021. Their window of contention is just about to open. If they can get a good college pitcher who will be in the big leagues within the next two, three years even. You know, as soon as late 2020 early 2021. If we have that season, that would be the way to go for them to open their window of contention sooner.

Robin Lundberg: Now, when it comes to the Yankees specifically, Max, what kind of needs do you think they need to fill?

Max Goodman: Well, for the Yankees, six out of their top ten prospects are right-handed pitchers and of their top 30 prospects, there's only one lefty. So I think that if there's one position that they would benefit the most from in this 2020 shortened MLB draft, it would be taking a southpaw. But, Robin, I don't think that's actually what they're going to end up doing. You know, the Yankees have the 28th pick in this first round on Wednesday night. And depending on the value of who drops to number 28 in this shortened, unprecedented format, I think the Yankees are just going to focus on building up the middle. If there is a a shortstop that happens to fall that has a high value and a good future, potentially a catcher or just a pitcher, overall, there are a lot of talented college righty pitchers that even Matt was hinting at just now that the Yankees could end up going with. And I think that applies to all of the teams that have a low pick in the first round, they're going to pick based on value.
