Major League Baseball outfielder Torii Hunter says he was called a racial slur in Boston "100 times". Wednesday the Red Sox backed up his account with a statement.

Sports Illustrated host Robin Lundberg talked with SI media columnist Jimmy Traina about the significance of the team taking this stance, as Jimmy believes it is the kind of action necessary to prove this really is a moment in time. You can see more of what he has to say in Traina Thoughts.

Robin Lundberg: Less than a week after Torii Hunter said he was called a racial slur in Boston a hundred times, the Red Sox released a statement confirming his accounts, saying his experience is real. For more, I'm joined now by our media columnists, Jimmy Traina. Jimmy, you think it's significant that the Red Sox did this?

Jimmy Traina: I did, because, you know, acknowledging it is one step in the right direction. But not only did the Red Sox acknowledge it, but they pointed out that there were seven incidents that were reported. And, you know, that is directly going after your paying customers. And that's what I think you and I have to see leagues, you know, the NFL, especially with their kneeling battle coming up. That's what you have to do if you're going to make significant changes. You cannot worry about every dollar and cent and boycotts and pissing off your customers. You just got to do the right thing. The Red Sox did this time.

Robin Lundberg: And they weren't vague in their response either. Like you said, they brought the receipts.

Jimmy Traina: Right. And, you know, they're backing up a player who is not a red sock, who is, you know, basically calling out the franchise, the fans, even, you know, the city. I mean, it really is that kind of a big thing. And, you know, the Red Sox backed up this player. And I think it's very, very significant and shows you that, you know, we've heard a lot of cliches over the past couple of weeks. One of them being like, you know, this feels different. Well, this is different. It doesn't feel different. I think the Red Sox statement shows you that it's different because that statement would not have happened in past years.
