The New York Yankees could be players in the starting pitching market come the MLB trade deadline.

With news that starting pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. being placed on the 15-day injured list, it once again highlights the Yankees' need for pitching depth.

Chicago Cubs starter Drew Smyly has been linked to New York via Inside the Cubs.

The piece gives logical reasons as to why Smyly would fit with the Yankees.

"New York has debuted a starting rotation this season largely missing Luis Severino and Carlos Rodón. Good news for the Yankees, though, as manager Aaron Boone said that Rodón is slated to face hitters Wednesday.

But depth is important if the Yankees want to remain contenders in the American League East race."

Now add in the fact they are without Cortes, and the need for a starter like Smyly only rises.

Additionally, Smyly has an option for the 2024 MLB season.

Smyly has thrown 65.2 innings this season and has compiled a 3.56 ERA with an impressive 1.112 WHIP.

He would slot right into the Yankees rotation as a middle-of-the-order type pitcher.

If New York wishes to make a strong push down the stretch and find postseason success, a move for a player like Smyly will be necessary.
