New York Yankees Still Have 'Serious Interest' In Cy Young Winning Pitcher
The New York Yankees might not be done making big splashes this offseason after all.
According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports, the New York Yankees still have serious interest in reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell.
Per Nightengale, the Yankees, who made a five-year, $150 million offer that was turned down by Snell earlier this winter, are waiting to see him the lefty's price tag drops on a long-term deal or if he would be willing to take a short-term deal of $35 million per year.
The Yankees acquired superstar outfielder Juan Soto, who is playing on the final year of arbitration, meaning there is no guarantee they will be able to retain him in free agency next winter. So, continuing to beef up their roster in the star department would be the best strategy to try and make a serious run at a World Series title if this is Soto's lone season in the Bronx.
The only significant acquisition the team has made on the pitching side this offseason was signing righty Marcus Stroman to a two-year, $37 million deal. While Stroman is a solid No. 2 or No. 3 option, depending on Carlos Rodon's performance this year, adding Snell gives the Yankees two co-aces and a very deep rotation.
The Yankees are hoping Snell's price tag drops, and if it does, they could potentially jump. But he still won't be cheap, as his initial desired deal was rumored to be $270 million. While it likely won't be that number, the two-time Cy Young winner will still be paid handsomely by someone, whether it's the Yankees or another team.
