A former member of the New York Yankees is returning to the East Coast after a brief stay in the South.

The Philadelphia Phillies signed right-hander Jacob Barnes to a minor league deal, the club announced.

Barnes had a very short stay in the Yankees organization last season but was able to don pinstripes. The 33-year-old signed with New York on Aug 30 and made the big-league club on Oct 1.

After throwing 1 2/3 scoreless with two hits allowed, a hit batsman and a pair of strikeouts, he was designated for assignment the following day.

Barnes started the current season in the Texas Rangers organization and was surprisingly effective before his release. The veteran hurler posted a 2.21 ERA but had some underlying stats that are concerning. He had a 17-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .262 batting average against in 1.57 WHIP in 20 1/3 innings for Triple-A Round Rock to open the year.

While his production has been solid, the Yankees certainly will not miss Barnes, nor do they regret letting him go.

Unless the right-hander's luck continues and his inflated number of baserunners allowed do not come back to bite him, it's unlikely that Barnes will be of much use to the Phillies either.
