MLB Insider Says key Yankees Want Anthony Volpe on Opening Day Roster

In this story:
He has supporters.
Top prospect Anthony Volpe has certainly put together a strong Spring Training, which has him in the thick of the Yankees' shortstop competition.
While Volpe only has 22 games of experience in Triple-A, he is still in the running for the starting shortstop job along with fellow top prospect Oswald Peraza and veteran Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
According to The New York Post's Jon Heyman, several key Yankees players want Volpe on the team, which could increase his chances of making the club.
Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner also spoke glowingly of Volpe, and though he wouldn't publicly take sides, he did say: “If I really, really feel strongly about something then I’m probably going to make sure it’s done.”
On Thursday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone gave Volpe's candidacy a vote of confidence as well.
"Volpe's very much in the running to be on the team on Opening Day," Boone told Foul Territory. "We've got two more weeks to go here. Those conversations will start to happen in earnest."
"He has played awesome. He has come in with one of the big stories of camp, and he's delivered and performed."

Entering Grapefruit League play on Thursday, Volpe is batting .333 with a .459 on-base percentage and a 1.126 OPS. He also has two home runs, three RBIs and four stolen bases.
Volpe is the Yankees' No. 1 ranked prospect and the No. 5 prospect in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline.
While Volpe initially seemed to be a long shot to make the Opening Day roster due to his lack of experience at Triple-A, he has performed so well in camp that he now has a legitimate shot to make the big-league club as the starting shortstop.
