New York Yankees 2023 Top 30 Prospect Wraps: Brando Mayea

In this story:
InsideThePinstripes.com will review each of the New York Yankees’ Top 30 prospects, as ranked by MLB.com at the end of the 2023 season.
No. 11: OF Brando Mayea, Florida Complex League Yankees (Rookie)
Statistics for 2023: (38 games): .276/.382/.400/.782 with 27 runs, seven doubles, one triple, three home runs, 18 RBI, 22 walks, 27 strikeouts, 22 stolen bases.
Season Transactions: Mayea signed with the Yankees in 2023 and spent the summer with the Yankees Dominican Summer League team.
Season Summary: Mayea got started right away with his first pro season and posted an impressive slash line with a little power thrown in. But the more impressive pieces of his first pro season was the fact that he walked nearly as much as he struck out and he stole 22 bases, which was one-third of the times he reached base (62). That helped him slide quickly up the Yankees’ prospect list.
Path Through the Organization: The Yankees are never opposed to spending money, whether it’s long-term contracts, free-agent contracts or international money. Mayea benefited, as the Cuban snagged a $4.35 million signing bonus from the Yankees in January. The 17-year-old is just starting his career, but his make-up as a player is drawing comparisons to former Yankees slugger Gary Sheffield.
What’s next: MLB.com scouts projects that his tools are plus or better across the board, which makes him a potential five-tool player at the MLB level. He projects as a quality hitter who could be a 30-home run hitter in the Majors, along with the high-level speed and glove to be able to play center field. The Yankees don’t have to rush Mayea, especially given his age. But his talent, if scouting reports are accurate, may accelerate his development in 2024. Given that he wrapped up 2023 in the Florida Complex League, a two-level jump next season isn’t out of the question.
