A promising step in the right direction on the road to recovery.

On Monday, Yankees starter Luis Severino threw his first bullpen session since straining his right lat.

Severino's bullpen consisted of 22 pitches; he threw all of his breaking pitches including a new splitter that he's working on.

Prior to his bullpen session, Severino had been playing catch at 120 feet.

Severino was scratched from his final spring start before it was revealed that he had a low grade right lat strain.

Severino had a lat strain last season, which knocked him out for two months of action.

The Yankees are hoping that Severino can make it back sooner this time around. And it's a positive sign that he has already shifted to the phase of throwing bullpens.

The next step in Severino's process will be facing hitters, which will likely be the last hurdle he has to clear before heading out on a rehab assignment.
