76ers vs. Bucks: 3 Matchups to Watch on Opening Night

In this story:
On Thursday night, the Philadelphia 76ers are set to begin their schedule for the 2023-24 season. First up for them is a matchup on the road against Giannis Antetokounmpo.
As two of the top teams in the conference, there are multiple things to watch in a game like this. That said, here are three matchups that are worth keeping an eye on.
Damian Lillard vs. De'Anthony Melton
This offseason, the Bucks pushed all in to make another run at the NBA title. They parted with Jrue Holiday to make way for Damian Lillard. In his regular season debut with his new team, the All-Star guard will have a lot of eyes on him.
With James Harden going through his ramp-up, De'Anthony Melton will likely be inserted into the starting lineup. If so, he's sure to get the first crack at defending Lillard.
If the Sixers want any shot at stealing a win in Milwaukee, they'll need to slow down their star duo. Taking on a big-time matchup like this will be a good test for Melton to open the year.
Tyrese Maxey vs. Bucks backcourt
Heading into this season, many are expecting Tyrese Maxey to make "the leap." As the Harden saga continues, the young guard will be called upon to be the No. 2 behind Joel Embiid.
Looking at this matchup, Maxey has a chance to put together a big scoring night. With Holiday gone, the Bucks' perimeter defense has taken a major hit. This should allow Maxey to attack mismatches and get downhill consistently.
Depending on how the Sixers slow down Lillard, Maxey having a big offensive night might be the best way to combat him.
Joel Embiid vs. Giannis Antetokounmpo
Finishing up this list is the two main stars in this primetime matchup. They might not defend each other every time down, but Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo should match up at times throughout this game.
For the Sixers, Nick Nurse might be best off putting Embiid on Giannis. Brook Lopez is more of an outside threat now. Making Tobias Harris or P.J. Tucker more reasonable options to defend him. Having Embiid match up with Giannis will allow him to wall off the two-time MVP and still be able to protect the rim.
Embiid putting together a big night is crucial for the Sixers as they look to secure an opening night win. If they want to be in any position to win, he'll have to outplay Giannis on both ends.
