Daryl Morey, 76ers Officially Announce Roster Move After Win vs. Magic

The Philadelphia 76ers have promoted their two-way rookie, Ricky Council.

Coming off of a big win against the Orlando Magic on Friday night, the Philadelphia 76ers made an expected roster move.

In a press release, Sixers’ President of Basketball Operations, Daryl Morey, announced that the the team has officially signed Ricky Council IV to a standard NBA contract.

With that move, Council is officially playoff-eligible for Philadelphia.

Council entered the NBA this season as an undrafted prospect out of Arkansas. Following the 2023 NBA Draft, the Sixers made Council one of their three selections for a two-way slot. While the team had moving pieces throughout the year, Council stuck around.

For good reason, too. When the Sixers allowed Council to play with their NBA G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, Morey and the front office quickly found out that the young high-flyer was somebody they could bring up and try out in the rotation.

During Delaware’s Showcase Cup run, Council averaged 24 points, five rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block in 16 games. In the G League regular season, Council produced 23 points per game on 47 percent shooting from the field in 11 games.

While the Blue Coats didn’t follow up their G League title run with another trip to the Finals, Council managed to get two postseason matchups under his belt before the season concluded. With the lights brighter, the rookie averaged 30 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks across two matchups.

Most of Council’s playing time came with the Coats this year, but he garnered plenty of opportunities with the 76ers as well. In 31 games, Council averaged roughly nine minutes on the floor. During that time, he accounted for six points per game while shooting 48 percent from the field and 36 percent from deep.

Council’s athleticism stood out, and his limited action on the main roster made it clear that he belongs as a reserve. Therefore, the Sixers will make sure he’s around for the team’s potential postseason run. Council joins the veteran guard Jeff Dowtin as the other former two-way signee to land a standard deal with the team.
