Former Sixers Draft Pick Charles Bassey Lands Contract Extension

In this story:
After getting waived by the Philadelphia 76ers ahead of the 2022-2023 NBA season, sophomore big man Charles Bassey has landed himself a multi-year extension with the San Antonio Spurs.
Following his one-year stint in Philadelphia, Bassey couldn’t make final cuts with the Sixers ahead of his second NBA season. As the Sixers only had one roster spot available, it was believed Bassey would be the odd man out in favor of the young sharpshooter Isaiah Joe.
However, the Sixers opted to keep an open roster spot and decided to waive both prospects. Joe landed on his feet by signing a deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Bassey picked up a two-way contract with the San Antonio Spurs.
Throughout the year, Bassey split time between San Antonio and their G League affiliate, the Austin Spurs. In the G League, Bassey appeared in ten regular season games, spending an average of 30 minutes on the floor. During that time, he accounted for 23 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks while producing 69 percent of his field goal attempts.
The Spurs wouldn’t keep Bassey buried in the G League. On the main roster, he appeared in a career-high 25 games averaging 14 minutes on the floor. Producing 67 percent of his field goals, Bassey averaged five points per game. He also came down with five rebounds over that stretch.
A young and rebuilding San Antonio team clearly sees a future for Bassey. Therefore, they signed him to a four-year extension worth over $10 million, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
While the Sixers couldn’t find playing time for Bassey behind Joel Embiid during his short stint in Philadelphia, the Spurs will take advantage of the 22-year-old’s development this season and keep him around long-term as they continue their rebuild.
