Warriors' Klay Thompson Could Be Future Free Agent Target for Sixers

Klay Thompson could pop up on Sixers' free agent radar

Looking ahead to the summer of 2024, the Philadelphia 76ers will have a lot of cap space to work with. Following recent news, one interesting name could be on their radar.

Klay Thompson has been a key piece of the Golden State Warriors dynasty, but his time with the franchise could be coming to an end. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski recently reported that the two sides are far apart in contract negotiations. Thompson is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.

"I'm told that there has been absolutely no progress on a Klay Thompson extension in Golden State," Woj said. "That they are both still apart on years and money, and there's a very real possibility that Klay Thompson goes into free agency next summer without a deal."

The Sixers will have money to spend, and from a fit perspective, Thompson makes a lot of sense. Even with his age and injury history, he is a player who could move the needle.

After missing two years due to injury, Thompson looked like his old self last season. He played in 69 games and posted averages of 21.9 PPG, 4.1 RPG, and 2.4 APG. The five-time All-Star also shot 41.2 percent from three on close to 11 attempts per game.

Over the years, plenty of marksmen have come along and had some of their best seasons alongside Joel Embiid. Pairing him with one of the game's greatest shooters would elevate the reigning MVP even more. They'd be great partners in dribble hand-off scenarios, and Thompson is an elite kick-out option on the perimeter.

There are certainly risks with going after a player like Thompson, but he is still someone the Sixers should keep in mind. He understands what it takes to win at the highest level and could be a complement to both Embiid and Tyrese Maxey
