76ers' Glenn Robinson III Details Decision to not Wear Social Justice Statement

When the 2019-2020 NBA season resumes in Orlando, Philadelphia 76ers veteran wing Glenn Robinson III plans to keep his last name on the back of his jersey. A few weeks ago, after many players raised concerns about the return of basketball becoming a distraction from social injustice, the NBA came up with the idea to allow players to replace the last names on the back of their jerseys with a social statement.
After providing a long list of options to choose from, the list was met with criticism from players and fans. 76ers veteran forward Mike Scott referred to the list as "terrible" and considered it to be a "bad miss" by the NBA. While many players seemed intrigued with the idea initially, the end result disappointed many as players reportedly had little to no say in what they could choose to replace their last names with.
Glenn Robinson III seems to fall under that same category. "I have elected to keep my name on the back of my jersey when the NBA season resumes in Orlando," Robinson III wrote in a statement, which he tweeted on Thursday. "I would have liked to honor Trayvon Martin's name, or use the name of my foundation (Angels Are Real Indeed)."

"I remain committed through actionable measures to keep aiding the fight against racism, police brutality, social injustice, and inequalities," he continued. "We need the strength of our black fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, family, and friends." Although Robinson III won't wear a statement on his jersey, the Sixers' veteran will continue to put his money to good use.
On Thursday, Robinson III announced the ARI Foundation would donate $2,500 to The Sojourner Truth House in his hometown of Gary, Indiana. In addition to his latest donation, Robinson also plans to keep up with contributing $22 for every point he scores when the NBA season resumes. So far this season, Robinson's on-court production has helped produce $15,576 for the ARI Foundation. That number is expected to increase as the Sixers will continue their season on August 1st.
