Potential 76ers Buyout Target Spotted at Lakers Game

In this story:
With a few roster spots opened up following the 2024 NBA trade deadline, the Philadelphia 76ers are expected to be busy in the buyout market.
While the most popular candidate linked to the 76ers happens to be the former Miami Heat guard, Kyle Lowry, one NBA insider linked the former Brooklyn Nets ball-handler Spencer Dinwiddie to Philadelphia as well.
On deadline day, Dinwiddie was recognized as one of the few Brooklyn Nets who could find themselves landing somewhere else. Sure enough, Dinwiddie was sent packing to the Toronto Raptors. However, the Raptors had no plans to have Dinwiddie suit up for them.
Shortly after the trade, the Dinwiddie was reportedly waived. The Athletic’s Shams Charania noted the 76ers could be a potential suitor for the veteran guard, along with the Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Pelicans, and Los Angeles Lakers.
While a handful of teams were expected to show interest in Dinwiddie, the LA Times reported that his next destination is likely narrowed down to just two teams — the Lakers and the Mavs.
Dinwiddie is no stranger to the latter organization. After his 44-game run with the Washington Wizards during the 2021-2022 season, the veteran guard was moved to the Mavericks at the trade deadline. He remained with the Mavericks for 53 games of the 2022-2023 NBA season. Nearly one year after getting traded to the Mavs, Dinwiddie was dealt right back to where he generated a name for himself in the NBA.
Over the past two seasons, Dinwiddie started at point guard for the Nets. As it became clear his second stint wasn’t going as Brooklyn or Dinwiddie had hoped, the Nets cut ties. A return to Dallas shouldn’t be ruled out, but there are signs that Dinwiddie could be LA-bound, as he attended the Lakers-Pelicans matchup, sitting next to the team’s GM Rob Pelinka.

After wrapping up his 48-game stint with Brooklyn this season, Dinwiddie parted ways with the organization, averaging 13 points, three rebounds, and six assists. He struggled with his shot this season, draining just 39 percent of his attempts and 32 percent of his threes.
Targeting another ball-handler seems to be a move the Sixers plan to make in the buyout market. However, all signs were pointing towards the team going after Lowry. While Dinwiddie might’ve been a potential plan B, it seems the Lakers might be on track to swooping him up.
