Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has put the franchise on notice, proclaiming he would not sign a contract extension until he sees a clear commitment to winning an NBA championship. Although he’s signed through the 2024-2025 season, the “Greek Freak” will be eligible to sign an extension this September.

However, he is unlikely to explore that option, explaining he must first see the “dynamics” of the team now that they’re under the guidance of new head coach Adrian Griffin.

“You've got to see the dynamics,” Antetokounmpo said. “How the coach is going to be, how we're going to be together. At the end of the day, I feel like all my teammates know, and the organization knows that I want to win a championship. As long as we're on the same page with that, and you show me, and we go together to win a championship, I'm all for it,” said Giannis in a talk with the New York Times.

Cautious approach

At age 28, Giannis appears to be primed to enter his prime, and it’s clear he wants to spend these years chasing NBA titles. After winning his only NBA championship in 2021, the Bucks have faltered the last two seasons. Last season’s end was particularly humbling, as they got ousted by the eighth-seeded Miami Heat in the first round.

Rejuvenated and motivated for a bounceback, Giannis wants to see if everyone is on the same page as he is.

“I would not be the best version of myself if I don't know that everybody's on the same page, everybody's going for a championship, everybody's going to sacrifice time away from their family like I do. And if I don't feel that, I'm not signing,” Giannis said.

Title chase

Giannis is one of the dominant players in the NBA right now. He’s also one of the most low-key stars in the league, rarely causing a fuss on and off the court. But this offseason, he's made it clear that he wants to win more championships with the Bucks.

“Winning a championship comes first,” Giannis added. “I don't want to be 20 years on the same team and don't win another championship.”
