Paul George Explains Controversial Comment After Loss

In this story:
After the LA Clippers lost to the Dallas Mavericks on Friday, star forward Paul George spoke about being a glue guy, and how that mindset threw him off his game early:
Paul George said he intended to focus his energy on defense and rebounding given LAC's struggles in those areas the last two games, to "just be the glue guy tonight, which put me in a non-aggressive attack mode, which I won't do again. Just felt out of character on the floor."

These remarks were controversial, as George can often get in his own way when it comes to aggression and assertiveness. Clippers head coach Ty Lue was asked about these comments from George, and told reporters he had a conversation with the star forward about remembering who he is, which is much more than a glue guy.
Following LA's loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon, George clarified what he meant by these comments, saying, "I know who I am and what I am in the league. That approach purely came from - You lose guys like [Robert Covington], [Nicolas Batum], the guys that were the glue guys for us… somebody’s gotta fill in that void of doing the nasty work, the dirty work, getting the hustle points, the hustle plays... So that’s where the mindset came from. It wasn't to defer or tale a step back, it was just try to figure out how can we f--king win?"

While George now understands that was not the best approach, it does make sense why he felt this way, since the Clippers were without their important glue guys that went to Philadelphia in the James Harden trade.
