Former NBA Star Reveals Wild Doc Rivers Story

During a recent episode of Gil’s Arena, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas shared a wild story about Doc Rivers accepting the Philadelphia 76ers head coaching job shortly after being let go by the LA Clippers.

"Doc sent Tyronn Lue to Philly," Arenas said. "Lobbied for him. Lobbied for him. 'This is your guy, this is a great coach. This is gonna be good for you guys.' Game 7 [vs. Denver], Doc found out he was getting fired… He called Philly and said, 'Yeah, I want the job now.'"

While Arenas was framing this as if Rivers went behind Lue’s back, it seems very unlikely that that’s what occurred. Lue and Rivers still have a close relationship, and it was Lue who took the Clippers job after Rivers was let go. Even if Rivers took the 76ers job while Lue was still technically in the running for it, it’s likely the two spoke prior to that occurring, and knew Lue would be next in line to coach the Clippers.

Now no longer with the 76ers, Rivers recently accepted an analyst job with ESPN. It’s unclear if Rivers ever plans to coach again, but he will be stepping away from the sidelines for the time being while he gets back into television work. While this was a wild story that Arenas shared, the framing is likely not entirely correct.
