NBA MVP Odds: An Early Look at the MVP Race

In this story:

I normally would not want to look at the NBA MVP race so early in the season, but it is rare that you get the NBA off for an entire day. So with that in mind, let's take a look at how the NBA MVP odds are through the first couple of weeks into the season.

The odds on favorite haven't changed since the start of the season. Nikola Jokic (+250) has remained in front of the race and he is off to a fantastic start to the season. Jokic is coming off a triple-double performance against the Pelicans last night and cemented his status as the best player in basketball with the run he had in the playoffs. Jokic is likely to stay at the top of the race for the foreseeable future and someone takes the lead from him.

Luka Doncic (+450) comes in at second right now and it would be hard to argue against it. Doncic is nearly averaging a triple-double and he has led the Mavericks to a great start.

Those two are the front runners, while Jayson Tatum (+700), Joel Embiid (+800), and Stephen Curry (+900) follow them. Embiid has seen his stock rise with his performance this season in the wake of the James Harden trade. Curry and the Warriors are off to a great start this season and Tatum is the best player on what might be the best team in the NBA right now.

Some notable players follow the top five. Giannis Antetokounmpo (+1100), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (+1800), Kevin Durant (+2000), and Damian Lillard (+2200) are the other contenders to watch.

So where are the Hawks?

Trae Young has the best odds on the team at +3000, while Dejounte Murray is at +10000. Murray is off to a fantastic start to the season while Young has been in a shooting slump to start. I think Young gets going, but I think Murray is clearly playing better right now.
