Hornets Trade No. 2? There's Only One Scenario Where it Makes Sense

Charlotte won't trade the second pick in the draft unless it's a deal they just can't pass up.

Here in a couple of weeks, the Charlotte Hornets will be on the clock with the second overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. We think.

There's a slight chance that GM Mitch Kupchak could be interested in moving the pick in exchange for draft capital or a proven player. But it's going to take an overwhelming offer for Charlotte to even consider it. I don't expect Kupchak to actively shop the pick, but he will certainly listen if other teams call.

Looking at all the different scenarios, there are only two that make sense. The Hornets either make the pick or trade it to Houston.

Swapping with Portland would be ideal because you could still end up with the guy you want but the Blazers are unlikely to give up a future first to move up one spot. So with that being said, Portland is out of the mix.

Houston at No. 4 is interesting. You're only moving back two spots but you're likely going to get another young player or future first in the trade. Jabari Smith Jr. comes to mind although I'm not certain Houston is ready to give up on the former No. 3 overall pick after just one season. In this hypothetical trade, Charlotte would get Smith Jr., the No. 4 overall pick, and maybe a future 2nd (not like they need it). Moving back to No. 4 puts the Hornets in the Amen/Ausar Thompson, Jerace Walker tier. They can't afford to fall any further than fourth in the draft order.

Moving the pick for a proven all-star caliber player just doesn't seem like something Kupchak would do. He will potentially be spending money this offseason on new contracts for P.J. Washington and Miles Bridges and then eventually a new deal for LaMelo Ball. He's constantly reiterated that this "small market" team has to draft and develop its talent and make a "savvy" trade once in a while. I don't see a blockbuster deal being in the cards, especially for a player who carries a rather large contract.

In all likelihood, the Hornets will keep possession of the No. 2 pick and make their choice between Brandon Miller and Scoot Henderson.
