Discouraged Jason Kidd Reacts to Kyrie Irving Injury After Slew of Bad Luck for Mavs

The Dallas Mavericks can't catch a break. Their long list of injuries grew Monday when Kyrie Irving went down late in the first quarter and didn't return with a left knee sprain. Before Irving left for the locker room, though, he courageously went to the free-throw line and sank two foul shots.

Later in the game, Dallas' reserve point guard Jaden Hardy sprained his right ankle and would not return. In a season marred by seemingly never-ending injuries, coach Jason Kidd acknowledged that luck wasn't on his team's side when asked about Irving's injury.

"Just unlucky, you know, hope that he's healthy and it's not serious," Kidd said to reporters postgame. "The injuries that we've had this season, guys are trying to hold it together. You get other bodies back and it just seems that every time we're close to getting someone back, someone goes down. And tonight both Hardy and Kyrie go down and so we're running out of bodies here, but guys keep fighting."

The Mavs shocked the basketball world when they traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for a package centered around star big man Anthony Davis. Davis was hurt during his debut in Dallas and has been sidelined since Feb. 8 with a left abductor strain.

Doncic missed time himself when he was still with the Mavs. Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, P.J. Washington and Caleb Martin are currently on the shelf for Dallas.

The Mavs fell 122–98 to the Kings Monday, dropping to 32–30 on the year as they hold onto the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference, the final play-in tournament spot. As the regular season nears its close, Kidd hopes for some good news for his star point guard.
