Lakers News: Austin Reaves Acknowledges Speculation About Spurs Interest This Offseason

In this story:
Entering the NBA offseason, one of the biggest questions was what was going to happen with Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves. It was well-known that Reaves always wanted to return to Los Angeles, but there was a potential threat of another team offering him almost double what the Lakers could.
LA would have likely matched any offer that came to Reaves, but it would have set them back in terms of their salary cap down the line. Luckily for the Lakers, no other team offered him the maximum, and he returned to LA on a very team-friendly deal for the next four years.
Recently, on ESPN's The Lowe Post Podcast with Zach Lowe, Reaves opened up about the possibility of leaving the Lakers, and he said that the thought of going to the San Antonio Spurs was potentially intriguing.
“It definitely creeps into your mind obviously when theres a little bit of talks back and forth about ya know, something coming to light. But I didn’t think that there was any way that the Lakers didn’t match whatever was offered. They pretty much made it pretty clear that they were gonna make whatever."

San Antonio was one of the few teams that could have afforded to offer Reaves the maximum salary, but they decided to go against it. They likely didn’t want to waste their time tying up their finances, only for the Lakers to match the offer at the last minute.
But Reaves being interested in teaming up with rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama makes sense. Wembanyama is the most hyped prospect to enter the NBA since LeBron James, and many believe that he will be the next great player.
But the chance to continue being a member of the Lakers was too good to pass up for Reaves. Like the team, he made it clear that he wanted to remain in LA.
“You think about it a little bit, but at the end of the day, I wanted to be in LA. I love it out here, ya know love the organization, the fans.”

The Lowe Post Podcast
Reaves will be a key driving force to how the Lakers season goes this year. If he can step up his game even more, LA could become even scarier. He wants to win, and the roster looks very promising at this point.
