Dallas Mavs at Washington Wizards Preview: Kyrie Irving OUT with Foot Injury

As the Dallas Mavericks try to bounce back from an ugly loss, they’ll have to do so without star point guard Kyrie Irving on a second night of a back-to-back against the Washington Wizards.

One good thing about the NBA having an 82-game schedule is that it leaves little time to dwell on a deflating loss, and the Dallas Mavericks are hoping to completely flush the blowout loss that happened in New Orleans on Tuesday night.

Luka Doncic and the Mavs will attempt to bounce back into the win column against the Washington Wizards on a second night of a back-to-back in D.C. Doncic, who is coming off of his worst performance of the season, didn’t play in the fourth quarter of the Mavs’ loss to the Pelicans, and he wasn’t on Wednesday’s injury report, so it looks like he’s primed for a redemption opportunity.

Kyrie Irving, on the other hand, showed up on the injury report as being “questionable” for tonight’s game with a foot injury this morning, and now, with just a little less than two hours until tip-off, he’s been ruled out. The eight-time All-Star sprained his foot in the second game of the season when the Mavs defeated the Brooklyn Nets, and he’s been managing that injury ever since.

Dallas enters Wednesday’s contest with an 8-3 record, good for third in the Western Conference standings. The Wizards are just 2-8, currently sitting as the second-worst team in the Eastern Conference. The Mavs haven’t won a game against the Wizards since May 1, 2021. Washington currently holds a four-game win streak over Dallas.

Can Doncic and humbled Mavs pull out a gutsy road win over the Kyle Kuzma, Jordan Poole and the Wizards? Here’s everything else you need to know about the game.

FINAL WORD: "It happens over the course of the season, but you can’t let it be reoccurring. We’ve had two or three games – the three losses that we’ve had – that were uncharacteristic of us," Mavs forward Grant Williams said.

"[The Pelicans] played faster than us, they played with a little more edge. As we know, that team’s very athletic, they do a great job of getting out in transition, it’s hard to beat when they do that. Keep them at half-court and you might have a better chance, and we didn’t do that tonight.”
