During his college years at Villanova University, Mikal Bridges secured two National Championships, establishing himself as one of the team's most reliable players and earning All-American honors.

Now, Villanova has decided to retire his #25 jersey in the Wildcats’ game against Maryland. After redshirting his freshman year, Bridges played an integral role for three years at Villanova, contributing significantly to their National Championship victories in 2016 and 2018 under the leadership of head coach Jay Wright.

“Excited, man. Just all my favorite friends will be there, see my old coaches and that,” Bridges said about the jersey retirement. “For Coach Wright for helping me become a man in college, that’s the biggest thing I took from it.”

Bridges’ Villanova legacy

During those championships, Bridges shared the court with teammates who also went on to become NBA players. Names like Josh Hart, Jalen Brunson, Donte DiVincenzo, and Ryan Arcidiacono have all played multiple years in the league, further strengthening Villanova’s track record of producing elite talents.

Bridges rightfully earned the retirement of his jersey due to his pivotal role in securing both championships. Winning two National Championships in quick succession is uncommon for schools, but under Coach Wright's guidance, the Wildcats defied the odds.

“From his first day on campus, Mikal’s selflessness endeared him to his teammates, coaches, and the entire Nova Nation,” Current Villanova head coach and former assistant coach Kyle Neptune said. “In his four years at Villanova, his work ethic helped him grow into an All-American and a two-time NCAA national champion.”

Bridges is the prime example of a Villanova player

The players from that Villanova squad have forged notable legacies in the NBA, recognized for their diligent work ethic and straightforward approach to basketball. Brunson, Hart, and Bridges stand among the league's most respected players, celebrated for their attitude and overall approach to both the game and their interactions with others.

Brooklyn Nets forward, in particular, has become the prototypical player teams around the league want on their roster.

“Today he remains an inspiration to our current players as he thrives in the NBA,” Neptune continued. “We’re so excited to add Mikal’s name to the list of Villanova legends whose jerseys have been retired.”
