Former Pistons, Lakers Forward Signs Overseas

Sekou Doumbouya has a new hoops team.

This week, a former Detroit Pistons draft pick has found his next playing destination.

According to BasketNews, Sekou Doumbouya has joined French basketball club Chorale Roanne Basket for the remainder of the current season.

Back in 2019, Doumbouya joined the Pistons as the 15th overall pick in the NBA Draft. At the time, Doumbouya was entering the NBA after stints with several teams in France.

The young veteran debuted for the Pistons at 19 years old. During his rookie effort, he appeared in 38 games, picking up a career-high 19 starts. While averaging 20 minutes on the floor, Doumbouya produced six points per game.

In his sophomore effort, Doumbouya appeared in 56 games. He averaged 16 minutes on the floor, producing six points, three rebounds, one assist, and one steal during that time. As a shooter, Doumbouya struggled during his two-year stint in Detroit, as he averaged just 38 percent from the field.

Following his second season with the Pistons, Doumbouya found himself included in multiple offseason trades. First, he was sent to the Brooklyn Nets in September 2021. One month later, the Nets traded Doumbouya to the Houston Rockets. The Rockets then waived the former first-round pick. A few days later, Doumbouya signed with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Being that the veteran forward was on a two-way deal, Doumbouya had just two on-court appearances for the Lakers in 2021-2022. Most of his time was spent with the team’s NBA G League affiliate in South Bay.

After his run with the Lakers organization, Doumbouya played exclusively in the G League last season with the Delaware Blue Coats, the Philadelphia 76ers’ affiliate. Although he was a member of the championship-winning squad, Doumbouya hasn’t managed to find a new NBA at this time. Therefore, he’ll continue hooping overseas.

"I am very happy to be in Roanne," Doumbouya said, per BasketNews. "I appreciate the atmosphere within the group, and I've felt a good chemistry with the coach since my arrival. Most importantly, I am thrilled to be back on the court and contribute to the team."
