Bigs of the Future: Chet Holmgren and Evan Mobley Set to Clash on Friday Night

For the first time in their NBA careers, the Thunder’s Chet Holmgren and Cavaliers’ Evan Mobley will face off.

As Chet Holmgren takes the floor for the second game of his NBA career on Friday night, it will be against a familiar face. He’s played alongside Cleveland Cavaliers big Evan Mobley in the past, who will likely be his primary matchup in this contest.

Especially given Jarrett Allen is out, the debut of these players clashing could be even more exciting.

Mobley was a top-three player in his high school class (2020) then was drafted No. 3 overall in the 2021 NBA Draft. Holmgren was also a top player in his class (2021) before being selected No. 2 overall in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Despite being a year apart, these two versatile bigs were teammates at 2019 USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Mini-Camp. There were plenty of times during those USA days in which the two went up against each other in scrimmages, but also played alongside one another. It was a big topic of conversation back in 2019, as both players had been tagged as future generational talents at the NBA level.

Although just a year apart, Mobley has more than 150 NBA games under his belt, while Holmgren has just one. Either way, both 7-footers are extremely skilled and should be one of the more exciting head-to-head matchup in Friday’s slate.

Moving forward, this could be a blossoming rivalry between the two young bigs. This is especially true considering they both play for quickly rising teams with bright futures.
