Portland Trail Blazers guard Shaedon Sharpe has a long road towards recovery ahead of him after tearing his meniscus. ESPN insider Shams Charania was the first to report the news.

"Portland Trail Blazers guard Shaedon Sharpe sustained a torn meniscus in his knee and is expected to miss six months, sources tell ESPN," Charania tweeted.

Sharpe, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, is coming off the best season of his career, where he averaged 20 points per game for the first time in his four years in the league.

Losing him is a massive blow for the Blazers, who were hoping he would continue to grow.

The Blazers are hoping Sharpe can make a midseason comeback, but the prognosis is still unclear as to when he will be able to return.

What Does This Mean for Blazers?

Sharpe was expected to go from playing mostly as a starter to a backup, but this injury confirms that completely. The Blazers won't have as much of a conundrum when it comes to figuring out who to play in the backcourt.

In some ways, this will help the Blazers figure out their backcourt rotation, as they already had four guards they wanted to play significantly. Ja Morant and Damian Lillard are expected to be the team's starting guards, while Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson come off the bench. All four of those players, and Deni Avdija, will be asked to step up a little more to shoulder the load of losing Sharpe for what could be most of, if not the entire, season.

The injury is in his right knee, which is different from the stress fracture he had in his left fibula that sidelined him for 4-6 weeks earlier this year. Sharpe is still just 23 years old, but having major injuries in both legs so early in his career could hurt him in the long run.

Sharpe is entering the first season of his four-year, $90 million contract extension. He is expected to stay in Portland for the long haul, but his long-term timeline has a little more mystery now than it did before.

Losing Sharpe is a significant loss for the Blazers, but the team has the depth and the ability to recover from this. There is also plenty of time for the Blazers to reassess how this affects the team moving forward ahead of training camp, which begins late next month.
