The Bears have a new assistant offensive line coach with experience in Luke Steckel, son of former Minnesota Vikings head coach Les Steckel.

Steckel replaces Austin King as line coach Chris Morgan's assistant. King, who had been a candidate for Rams offensive line coach but didn't get the job, has taken a position with the Denver Broncos.

Steckel has coached 10 years with the Titans and became the team's tight ends coach in 2021. The move provides the Bears with another coach who has a background in the wide-zone blocking scheme.

His NFL career started as assistant to the head coach with Cleveland from 2009-12, then he went to the Titans and was an offensive assistant from 2013-16.

Steckel became special assistant to the head coach in 2013, as well. He was promoted to assistant receivers coach in 2017, then became offensive assistant from 2018-21, when he became the tight ends coach.

In January, Steckel had been reported as a candidate for the vacant Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator post that eventually went to former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

Steckel's father was Vikings coach in 1984 after Bud Grant retired, but was fired after one year and Grant returned from retirement for a season until the Vikings hired Jerry Burns.

What the Bears could have in Steckel besides another experienced voice on the staff is another potential offensive coordinator in addition to quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko and receivers coach Tyke Tolbert, in case Luke Getsy were to get hired as a head coach in the future.
