Justin Fields and Caleb Williams Together?

Rob Rang's comment on Fox's mock draft leaves open a possibility many Justin Fields fans would love, with most simulations pointing at Caleb Williams for the Bears.

In this story:

It's turning into a mock draft rout.

Mockdraftdatabase.com collects mock drafts across the internet and what once was anyone's guess for the Bears with the first pick is clear and obvious in simulations.

Caleb Williams is being named as the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to the Chicago Bears on 85% of mock drafts.

When the Bears were finishing their season 3 1/2 weeks ago, the first pick nearly looked like a coin flip at 56% for Williams. No more.

Three months remain until the draft for scenarios to change and it's a little less than a month until the NFL Scouting Combine, but more mock drafts point at Williams as the Bears quarterback going foward. Drake Maye is viewed as Washington's pick at No. 2 on 69% of mock drafts.

The real uncertainty for the Bears appears to be the ninth pick in Round 1. No clear consensus has been achieved.

In fact, it's so difficult that the consensus on Mockdraftdatabase.com is Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze to the Bears but on only 24% of mock drafts. This is the lowest percentage for any pick among the top 12.

These two players show up as the Bears' picks on the mock draft by Connor Livesay of The33rdTeam.com, as well.

The post-conference title game mock by Luke Easterling of FanNation has the Bears thinking defense with their No. 9 pick and taking UCLA's Laiatu Latu, the explosive edge rusher who had a neck injury that led some doctors to conclude he'd never play again. He did and was spectacular. However, Kyle Crabbs of FanNation's Athlon Sports sums up the quandary well for teams looking at Latu.

"There’s little question that Latu can rush the passer at a high level, but where do you quantify the medical risk and uncertainty in the game of the NFL Draft?" he wrote. "That's an unenviable question to answer, but we’ve seen teams operate with caution in the past with these types of questions. It may ultimately cost Latu ground in the draft order."

This mock had the Bears passing on tight end Brock Bowers, tackle Olu Fashanu of Penn State and edge rusher Jared Verse of Florida State. Odunze went sixth to the Giants in this mock.

CBS Sports' Josh Edwards has the opinion in his latest mock that everyone else is drawing.

"Chicago's actions this offseason have convinced me that it intends to stick at No. 1 overall and pick a quarterback," Edwards wrote. "The Bears do not get the insane return from a trade, but they are able to recoup some of that by moving Justin Fields."

Again it's No. 9 where there is a difference of opinion and here it's saying the Bears take Jared Verse, the Florida State edge, and forget about taking a chance with Latu's neck.

Edwards' CBS sidekicks, Ryan Wilson and Chris Trapasso agree with the Williams choice but Trapasso sees the Bears taking the chance on Latu's neck at No. 9. With Wilson it's Odunze at No. 9,.

Another mock draft leaves open the possibility the Bears could actually draft Williams  No. 1 but keep Fields.

Veteran draft expert Rob Rang for Fox Sports points out how disappointed coach Matt Eberflus was with the passing game at season's end.

"GM Ryan Poles, head coach Matt Eberflus and new OC Shane Waldron will have their pick of the 2024 class and an opportunity to reset the rookie contract at the position, perhaps trading away Fields, but not necessarily so," he wrote.

This is something the Bears could afford for 2024, but doing it beyond that season wouldn't be possible. At this point, it would seem unlikely they could get much in return for Fields if they did this.

If they played out next season and found Fields had improved drastically, they'd no doubt find his value had gone up for a trade prior to the 2025 draft even if his salary also did. Or they would likely get back a ton of picks in return for trading Williams before the 2025 draft.

Rang also has a name attached to a Bears pick at No. 9 not mentioned by many other mocks. He has them taking Notre Dame tackle Joe Alt with Penn State tackle Olu Fashanu available.

This much is certain: If the Bears chose to draft Williams but also hold onto Fields, the player they pick at No. 9 would probably go completely unnoticed by the football world at large.
