Dot Connectors Enjoy Bears QB Situation

Analysis: Connecting the Dots can be a hazardous practice but there are some connectors between Caleb Williams and Chicago as well as Justin Fields and the Raiders.

In this story:

The tea leaf readers are out in full force.

With everyone looking for signs of where the Bears are going in the draft, the dot connectors see a couple indicators Caleb Williams could be going to the Bears with the first pick while Justin Fields could go by trade to the Raiders.

Here's why this is being suggested:

Williams has secured his first brand partnership, and it's with Trolli, which is a candy made by Ferrara Pan Candy. The company has long been situated in Chicago, with the headquarters now in the old Chicago Post Office since 2022. They have manufacturing plants in suburban Forest Park and Itasca.

Hmmmm.

The other such situation is a stretch but former Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy is reportedly among those who will interview for the Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator position. The thinking is Getsy would bring Fields to the Raiders in a trade.

It's easy to see why the Raiders would be interested in Getsy. He left an impression.

Last year Getsy took undrafted Division II QB Tyson Bagent against a Las Vegas defense current head coach Antonio Pierce was working with as linebackers coach and the Bears beat the Raiders convincingly 30-12 at Soldier Field.

Whether Getsy would want Fields as a QB is the real question in this bit of extreme speculation.

Fields seemed like anything but a real fit for the offense and Getsy devised QB running plays to get use out of his legs. Fields had trouble with some of the quick read plays in the offense, like slants and the wide receiver screens. Fields got sacked on 14.7% of passes and 10.6% of passes the last two years, yet Bagent's sack rate in 4 1/2 games behind the same offensive line was 3.4%.

Then there was the incident last year when Fields suggested at a press conference he wasn't being put in position with the offense to succeed, but then later walked this back in the locker room at a special "follow-up press conference" to clarify or cleanse things.

Still, Fields is extremely dangerous as a runner and deep passer. It definitely wouldn't be surprising to see the Raiders with interest in Fields. He did beat them in his first game as an official NFL starter in 2021 under Matt Nagy.

Fields seems to have untapped potential as a Lamar Jackson type of QB, but it's all a  matter of getting this out of him.

Nor would it be a shock to see Getsy get hired as Raiders OC, since finding OC candidates with NFL experience calling plays isn't easy. Also, the Bears ranked higher in scoring (18th) than any time since 2016 and higher in yards gained (20th) than any time since 2018.

Yet, Getsy was fired.

It just seems a complete reach to think Getsy would want to continue working with Fields after they were together two years and it ended with the OC's firing.

It's also possible the Raiders are doing the interview as fact-finding about Fields, much like some perceived the Bears' interview of OC candidate Kliff Kingsbury was really about Williams.

The Raiders do have the 44th pick in the draft in Round 2 and it's reasonable to think the Bears would be on the lookout for at least a second-rounder in exchange for Fields after paying their second-rounder out in the Montez Sweat deal.

If the trade happened, the Raiders would get an NFL starter who is an explosive runner with a strong arm and 38 starts as seasoning in exchange for a second-round pick.

If that trade happened, then it would be easy to see Williams wouldn't be the only one to get a sweet deal in a manner of speaking.
