Bills Ex Coach Rex Ryan Broncos Hire with Sean Payton?

Former Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan has an interview with the Denver Broncos for the defensive coordinator position under Sean Payton.

A familiar face for Buffalo Bills fans may be roaming the sidelines for the Denver Broncos next season.

On Sunday, Fox reported that the Broncos and new coach Sean Payton interviewed former Bills head coach Rex Ryan for their defensive coordinator position. Ryan was Buffalo’s head coach from 2015-2016 before getting fired. Ryan went 15-17 during his two seasons with the Bills.

Before becoming head coach of the Bills, Ryan held the same position with the New York Jets for six seasons. Ryan went 46-50 and led New York to two playoff appearances, where they went 4-2 and made the AFC championship game on both occasions.

Ryan got his start in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens in 1999. He was Baltimore’s defensive line coach from 1999-2004. In 2000, the Ravens had a historic defense that allowed just over 10 points per game and 60 rushing yards per game in the regular season. In the postseason, they allowed 23 points across four games and beat the New York Giants 34-7 in the Super Bowl on Jan. 28, 2001.

After six seasons as the defensive line coach, Ryan became Baltimore’s defensive coordinator for four seasons. In 2008, Ryan was also Baltimore’s assistant head coach. The Ravens made the playoffs twice during Ryan’s four seasons as defensive coordinator.

The Broncos had one of the better defensive units in the NFL, ranking 12th in points allowed per game and seventh in yards allowed per game. They got let down by Denver’s offense, which ranked dead last in points per game.

Ryan has in recent seasons worked as a studio analyst at ESPN.
