Bills Sign LB Tyler Matakevich to Multi-Year Deal

The Buffalo Bills' busy opening to the NFL's free agency period continued new contract agreements for linebacker Tyler Matakevich, a depth star on both defense and special teams.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Buffalo Bills are set to ink linebacker Tyler Matakevich to a two-year deal. The Temple alum and seventh-round pick from 2016 is set to return for a fourth season in Western New York after spending his first quartet with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Since coming over to the Bills in 2020, Matakevich has earned 32 tackles on special teams. He originally joined the team on a two-year deal and re-signed with them on a one-year extension to partake in their recent run to the 2022-23 AFC East divisional title.

In addition to his coverage endeavors, Matakevich has also spent some time on defense, playing 118 over the last two seasons. The Bills hosted his first professional interception, as he earned it in a blowout win over Houston in October 2021. Matakevich also earned a career-best 23 tackles and two pass breakups in his first tour with Buffalo the year before.

Bringing back Matakevich, as well as punter Sam Martin, is part of the relative luxuries that the Bills have been able to afford through a series of contract restructures, previously reworking the deals of players like Nyheim Hines, Tim Settle, and more. As it stands, Buffalo remains over $19 million over the salary cap before the new NFL year kicks in this week, the second-worst north rate in the league ahead of only New Orleans.

But as they inch toward a relative sense of financial stability, the Bills have made it clear they're wasting little, if any, time in getting work.
