Bills vs. Colts Notebook: Matt Barkley QB2, James Cook Ready to Step Up?

Who stood out for the Buffalo Bills in their preseason-opening win over the Indianapolis Colts?

The Buffalo Bills began their preseason campaign with a 23-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday at Highmark Stadium.

After falling behind 13-10 in the third quarter, Buffalo's offense found its stride, scoring 10 straight points to pull away in the fourth quarter. The offensive outburst was led largely by veteran quarterback Matt Barkley, who threw two touchdowns. Running back James Cook also found the end zone in the first quarter.

The Bills defense also had bright spots with three sacks and cornerback Dane Jackson's interception of Anthony Richardson on the first possession of the game.

Here are three takeaways from the Bills' preseason victory.

Barkley solidifies role as backup

If there was a competition between Barkley and Kyle Allen to see who will be Josh Allen's backup, it may have ended it as quickly as it started.

The veteran quarterback came off the bench and was efficient and picked apart the Colts defense. He completed 14 of 15 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Barkley found wide receiver Tyrell Shavers for a 22-yard score in the third quarter then connected with Dezmon Patmon in the fourth quarter for a 13-yard touchdown.

Kyle, who saw his first live-action under offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey got the start and struggled mightily. He completed 8 of 15 passes for 122 yards and an interception to Colts cornerback Darius Rush that was run back for a pick-six.

If Josh were to get hurt, Buffalo would be in a world of trouble. But if that were to happen, it seems clear Barkley would be the next man up to lead the offense.

James Cook ready for bigger role

It's no secret that Buffalo needs to diversify its offense, especially on the ground. Doing so would make the Bills offense tougher to defend and ease the workload on Josh.

Cook's performance on Saturday could be a sign that he's ready to step up and be featured more in the running game. The second-year running back had five carries for 20 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Though it was a small sample size, if Cook can continue to produce, he can make a good Bills offense even more dangerous.

Dorian Williams ready to help defense

With the loss of linebacker Tremaine Edmunds to the Chicago Bears, Buffalo needs someone to replace his production after five straight seasons with at least 100 tackles.

Bills third-round pick Dorian Williams may be up to the task. The rookie has had a strong training camp and was all over the field against the Colts, leading the team with seven tackles.

If Williams can continue to ascend and improve, he may have a chance to minimize the loss of Edmunds.
