Report: Broncos Expected to Cut Slew of Vets for Cap Relief

Their time in Denver is coming to an end.

Roughly $10 million under the salary cap, needs littering the roster, the Denver Broncos likely will release several high-dollar veterans in the lead-up to NFL free agency, which officially opens March 15.

Among the probable cap casualties, according to Woody Paige of the Denver Gazette, are offensive lineman Graham Glasgow, cornerback Ronald Darby, running back Chase Edmonds, and defensive tackle Mike Purcell.

All, to little surprise.

The Broncos currently have the 16th-most available cap space, with $9.734 million, per Spotrac.com. By cutting the aforementioned players, the team can save about $30 million — and jump to fourth-most.

Unloading former starters Glasgow and Darby, who don't appear in their 2023 plans, would free $20.647 million, leaving behind $6 million of dead money. Axing Edmonds and Purcell, both role players, would add another $9.42 million to the war chest (and only $286,765 in dead charges).

More than enough for general manager George Paton to allocate elsewhere.

"The Broncos must add at least three new starters at left guard, right tackle and, especially, the long-forsaken right tackle position," Paige wrote.

In addition to the OL, Denver is also expected to be in the market for running backs, defensive linemen, linebackers, and secondary help.

But not without first trimming the proverbial fat, a process that should begin imminently.
