Broncos Add Ex-Saints Starting OG on One-Year Deal

Calvin Throckmorton spent the 2023 campaign with Carolina and Tennessee.

Supplying depth to its interior offensive line, the Denver Broncos signed veteran guard Calvin Throckmorton to a one-year contract, the team announced Monday.

Throckmorton, 27, is entering his fifth NFL campaign, having spent his first two years playing for head coach Sean Payton in New Orleans. The former undrafted free agent — linemates with Broncos center Alex Forsyth at Oregon — was waived by the Saints in 2022 and split time last season between the Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans.

Altogether, Throckmorton (6-5, 311) has appeared in 46 career games, making 27 starts. He graded out in 2023 as Pro Football Focus' No. 65 OG among 79 qualifiers.

"Well-built tackle-to-guard prospect with very good core strength and displacement power in his upper body," reads his NFL.com scouting profile. "The problem for Throckmorton is that for all his contact balance and diligence to play under control, his lower body stiffness and lack of functional quickness permeates his play in both the run and pass and will be much more pronounced on an NFL offensive line. The technique and quality of play is draft-worthy but physical limitations might make him no better than a replaceable backup."

With Quinn Meinerz and Ben Powers entrenched as Denver's starting guards, Throckmorton will battle (and likely overtake) Quinn Bailey for primary swing duties — assuming the club doesn't add further competition via this month's Draft.

Throckmorton is the sixth outside free agent signed by the Broncos this offseason, joining safety Brandon Jones, defensive tackle Malcolm Roach, inside linebacker Cody Barton, offensive tackle Matt Peart, and wide receiver Josh Reynolds.
