When the Denver Broncos brought back Riley Dixon on Tuesday, the assumption was to create competition for the starting punter position.

So much for that.

Shortly after announcing Dixon's two-year contract signing, the Broncos withdrew their $940,000 exclusive-rights free-agent tender to P Corliss Waitman, according to the NFL's transaction wire.

Waitman — who reverts to unrestricted free agency, able to sign with any team — won the job out of training camp last year, besting veteran Sam Martin. The South Alabama product averaged 41.4 net yards per punt across a whopping 96 boots, 30 of which were downed inside the 20-yard line.

The Broncos officially tendered Waitman on March 13.

With that dissolved, Dixon is locked atop the depth chart under new special teams bosses Mike Westhoff and Ben Kotwica.

"I had a great experience here my first time around. Fortunate for an opportunity to come back and put my best football on the field," Dixon told the official Broncos website. "[Head] coach [Sean] Payton and coach Ben [Kotwica], these guys are awesome. They're football guys. That's all you can ever ask for as a player — to be put in positions to win — and these guys live and breathe it. Excited to get to work for them."
