Report: Broncos 'could' bring Demaryius Thomas back to Denver

You've got to love this time of year. Not one meaningful game has been played around the NFL but the news wire is on fire with personnel decisions being made left and right.

One piece of news that is likely to set Broncos Country aflame came via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. Demaryius Thomas, who was cut by the New England Patriots on Saturday, could be headed back to his original team.

Per a league source, the Broncos could be bringing Thomas back to town.

Thomas spent his first eight and a half seasons in Denver, the team that drafted him in the first round back in 2010. Thomas, a five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, was traded to the Houston Texans ahead of Week 9 last season.

Not long after, Thomas would suffer an Achilles tear. The Texans released him in February.

Two months later, Thomas signed with New England. But despite a strong preseason body of work, he was cut.

Thomas is the Broncos' second-leading receiver all-time behind only Rod Smith. For his career, Thomas has hauled in 688 receptions for 9,330 yards and a whopping 62 touchdowns.

He's so close to that pivotal milestone all veteran receivers yearn for — the 10K club. Thomas needs just 670 receiving yards to get there.

Roster politics

If PFT's report is true, Thomas would step onto a Broncos' roster replete with young receiver talent. I'm not sure who the odd man out would be but let's just say, River Cracraft had better not get comfortable. However, if Denver cut Cracraft to make room for Thomas, the team would not have a punt returner.

Thomas, now 31 years old, would (finally) again have a veteran quarterback with some wherewithal in Joe Flacco. Who knows whether the two could make some magic? Flacco does have a strong history of throwing to prolific veteran receivers.

The Broncos are already planning on rekindling one former relationship with linebacker Corey Nelson coming to town soon. Could Demaryius Thomas be No. 2? Only time will tell but something tells me Broncos Country would be absolutely stoked to welcome D.T. back to the Mile High City.
