Derek Wolfe is 'tired of hearing fans moan' about Broncos' lack of sacks

Derek Wolfe hears you and he wants you to shut up.

In case you missed it, the Denver Broncos are yet to register a sack in the 2019 regular season. All the vaunted talent of Von Miller, Bradley Chubb and the Broncos' front seven, combined with Vic Fangio's scheme, hasn't cut the mustard through two games. 

We heard Bradley Chubb's explanation. Defensive end Derek Wolfe echoed his teammate, while telling the fans to zip it, in so many words.

“I mean, the quarterbacks throwing the ball quick, what do you want us to do? I’m tired of hearing the fans moan about us not getting sacks when the ball is gone in two seconds," Wolfe said following Denver's 16-14 loss to the Chicago Bears. "There’s no sacks to be had. When they have the lead, they’re not just going to sit back and drop back to pass. It’s just the way it goes."

It is a fair point. Opposing teams have worked to neutralize the Broncos' pass rush with quick passes and by chipping Miller and Chubb. Still, you'd think someone would find a way to get home, or that maybe Wolfe or one of his fellow D-linemen could create some semblance of an interior push.

The Broncos are still feeling the bitter sting of Week 2's loss to Chicago — a game that was decided in the final 31 seconds in an entertaining comedy of improbable feats that saw the Bears win on a walk-off field goal with one second left on the clock. 

If Bradley Chubb isn't penalized on the epitome of a ticky-tack roughing the passer penalty, which gave Chicago and additional 15 yards of field position in that final half-minute, the Broncos likely win that game. Wolfe is still steaming over it. 

“I thought we won. And then I was like, Wait, how are they kicking a field goal? The time is out," Wolfe said. "And then before that I thought, ‘how do they call a roughing the passer on Chubb? All I know is that we just have to move on from this. We can’t let this define us. I think we showed how good of a team we can be and we’ve got to just keep on trucking, keep moving, keep pushing, keep grinding, and try not to be in that situation where we have to count on the refs to look at the clock and see that it’s actually at zero. I guess we’ve got to be up by a touchdown for that to happen.”

You catch that? A shot across the bow of the Broncos' offense. 

Holding an opponent to 16 points should be enough to win most NFL games. But it's not, when the offense only scores 14. 

Wolfe might want to put the onus back on the Broncos' offense but the truth is, the Broncos' defense has come up small now in consecutive weeks when the chips are down late in the clutch.
