Flacco: Broncos Now 'Believe' That 'Stacking Some' Wins Is Possible

Could Denver's first win of the season propel a turnaround?

One game at a time. 

We learned last week that Vic Fangio's definition of a 'turnaround' is winning the next game. However, in the wake of the Denver Broncos finally putting a notch in the win column, players in the locker room are excited. 

Winning breeds confidence and confidence breeds execution and intensity. Big things often times have humble beginnings and on the heels of the Broncos' 20-13 road win over the L.A. Chargers, players now dare to hope again. 

"We’ve been in a lot of games, but just haven’t been able to pull it off," QB Joe Flacco said following Week 5's victory. "It’s just one of those things where if that continues to happen then it’s just obviously not as easy to have that confidence that you should. We got the first one. Now, if we can start stacking some, I think guys now at least believe–we’ve all seen it. We’ve all witnessed it. We’ve all been through it. We can do it, so it’s definitely a little bit of added confidence that comes along with wins.”

Flacco himself was part of one of the most miraculous runs in modern NFL history when the 2012 Baltimore Ravens 'stacked' some wins down the stretch to make it into the playoffs as a Wild Card team and go all the way. The Broncos also had a season similar to that back in 2015, riding a red-hot and dominant defense all the way to a World Championship.

Only a few Super Bowl 50 holdovers remain in Denver but their veteran savvy and experience, combined with the way the youth on the roster is playing, could be a formula for "stacking" some wins. 

Looking ahead at the team's remaining games in October, the Broncos will face the Tennessee Titans at home, followed by another homestand vs. the Kansas City Chiefs and then closing out the month at Lucas Oil Stadium to take on the resurgent Indianapolis Colts. The Broncos' bye comes in Week 10 and if the team can make it to that point in the season hovering somewhere close to .500, anything is possible. 

Last year, the Colts made the playoffs after starting the season 1-5. Even the Broncos, back in 2011, started off 1-4 before going on a seven-game winning streak that culminated in an AFC West crown and a playoff berth. 

It can be done and it's good to see the Broncos' players espouse some confidence and hope. But if this team takes its eye off the ball and spends too much time looking ahead to the future in various 'what-if' scenarios, its a recipe for disaster. 

One game at a time. Take it by the inch, it's a cinch. By the yard, it gets hard. 

Keep the focus small and in the present and anything's possible, even for the 1-4 Denver Broncos. 

“When you have a lot of young guys and you have some new faces, it’s big to get these wins and to start to feel some juice," Flacco said.
