The Denver Broncos began Week 3 preparations for the Miami Dolphins without one of its top players on the field. Per Wednesday's team-issued injury report, safety Justin Simmons did not practice due to an apparent hip issue.

“He didn’t practice today," head coach Sean Payton confirmed. "He’s working and rehabbing."

The circumstances surrounding his hip remain unclear — Payton was predictably mum — but this is the second injury in as many months for Simmons, who missed the majority of training camp and the entirety of preseason with a tweaked groin.

He returned in time for Week 1 and played every defensive snap (73-of-73) in last Sunday's loss to Washington, pacing the club in total tackles (10). The three-time All-Pro currently ranks as Pro Football Focus' No. 74 safety among 79 qualifiers.

With Caden Sterns out for the year and PJ Locke still on injured reserve, Delarrin Turner-Yell would be the next man up if Simmons can't go against the Dolphins, whose explosive offense — averaging 30.0 points per game — leads the league in both total yards and passing yards.

Elsewhere on the injury report, outside linebacker Frank Clark (hip) and defensive lineman Mike Purcell (ankle) didn't practice while left tackle Garett Bolles (ankle) was a limited participant.
