Greg Newsome II Says He's Comfortable With The Browns

Greg Newsome II and Tony Fields II visited Berea-Midpark's girls high school flag football practice on Tuesday. In an interview with local media, Newsome shared his thoughts on being mentioned in trade rumors and his role with the team.

The NFL offseason is consistently a crazy time with a whirlwind of trade rumors as well. In recent times, Greg Newsome II and Wyatt Teller have been mentioned as potential trade candidates for the Cleveland Browns. Those rumors have since died down and it is safe to assume that both players will be on the roster in 2024.

On Tuesday afternoon, Greg Newsome II and Tony Fields II visited Berea-Midpark High School for their girls flag football practice. Both the talented nickel corner and backup linebacker had the opportunity to coach up the players. As the girls flag football game grows in Northeast Ohio, providing tips and motivation for the players is a pretty special opportunity for both players.

Newsome was able to take some time away from practice to speak with News 5's Camryn Justice and discussed his name being mentioned in trade rumors.

"Nah I don't pay attention. Obviously my family and stuff tell me and ask me. What goes through my head is nothing... I feel like I'm comfortable here," remarked Newsome. "I feel like AB and the ownership and all my coaches know what I'm capable of. They know what I bring to this team, not just on the field. Being one of those glue guys, being a guy that's always energetic, celebrating no matter what. I feel like they know my values, so I wasn't too worried about that."

Dec 3, 2023; Inglewood, California, USA; Cleveland Browns center back Greg Newsome II (0) celebrates.

Since joining Cleveland in 2021 as the 26th overall selection in the draft, Newsome has established himself as an integral part of one of the best cornerback rooms in the NFL. Denzel Ward and MJ Emerson look to lock down the outside, while Newsome consistently operates out of the slot.

Last season, the nickel corner had 49 tackles, 34 solo tackles, snagged two interceptions and was also credited for half a sack.

When asked about his role with the team, Newsome had positive things to say about being the nickel corner in Jim Schwartz's defense.

"I feel good. Whatever I can do to help the team win, I'll do," stated Newsome. "I was able to do a lot of things... blitz, I was able to cover a lot more in man-to-man, so I think I had a good role last year and I'm just ready to keep getting better at it."

Nickel corner may very well be one of the most difficult positions in the current pass-heavy brand of NFL football. Despite being a key piece for the Browns secondary, Newsome was the most susceptible of the three top corners last season.

If he can build off of year one in Schwartz's scheme and improve, then Cleveland's secondary will only become more of a dominant force. With how loaded some of the AFC wide receiver corps are this coming season, this will be a key for the success of the Browns.
