The reported compensation is a 2025 7th-round pick to the Chargers for the Browns to acquire Hopkins. Hopkins has been battling Cameron Dicker for the job in L.A. The Chargers announced that the young kicker had won the spot and this made Hopkins available via trade.
It is also now being reported that the Browns will waive Cade York as a result of this move. York has struggled since the team drafted him in the fourth-round of the 2022 draft, but this preseason was especially bad as York missed many field goal attempts in games.
For York, a fresh start elsewhere is probably in his best interest as well. It seemed that the kicker was experiencing psychological issues in games as he was reportedly performing well in practices. Things compounded by frustration from the fanbase as the misses kept piling up. This became the only good option for the team as they will play very meaningful games right away against the division.
Trading for Hopkins leaves little to chance as they get their guy for only a future pick. This also removes the need to bring in a group of kickers for a tryout this week.
