Shedeur Sanders strengthened his case in the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback competition during Saturday’s game, but some of his strongest comments were about the player competing against him.

Sanders completed nine of 11 passes in the first half, connecting with several receivers and finding Luke Floriea for a touchdown. Floriea finished with two receptions for 31 yards and one touchdown on four targets.

During his halftime interview with Aditi Kinkhabwala, Shedeur shifted the attention away from his performance and addressed fans booing Deshaun Watson.

“I don’t really feel comfortable,” Sanders said. “I don’t really like, overall, whenever the whole stadium is booing and stuff because he’s going out there, he’s trying to put in work too, just how we all are. Just as being a person, I don’t really like that, and I don’t really respect that.”

Sanders acknowledged that fans have their own opinions about Watson but said the reaction did not sit right with him.

“However y’all feel is how y’all feel about the individual, about the person,” Sanders said. “But when somebody is going out there trying to do their best, then it doesn’t really sit right with me overall. That’s something that we don’t really like.”

Sanders separates competition from personal feelings

Sanders and Watson are competing for the same position, but Sanders made a clear distinction between their professional competition and their personal relationship.

“While we work against each other, we’re both people that are trying to get to our goals,” Sanders said during the halftime interview. “A lot of the time, it’s like we’re in competition of our ability and what we can do, not as people in real life.”

Shedeur returned to the subject during his postgame press conference and offered an even stronger defense of Watson.

“In general, I don’t appreciate that at all,” Sanders said. “Regardless of competition, we’re all human beings, and I think we all need to understand that. We’re all humans.”

He said his response was rooted in treating others with the same respect he would want to receive.

“I don’t really do things to humans I wouldn’t really want done to me,” Sanders said. “I don’t really like making people feel uncomfortable in different spaces.”

The former Colorado star also thanked the fans for attending while reiterating that respect should remain part of the conversation.

“For all the fans and everything, we appreciate y’all showing up,” Sanders said. “However y’all feel about the situation with Deshaun and about everything, I think it’s more about a bigger purpose of just respect.”

Sanders could have used his efficient performance to promote himself in the competition. Instead, he supported Watson and emphasized that Cleveland’s quarterbacks must remain united regardless of who earns the starting job.

“This quarterback room and everybody has got to be a unit, got to be a team regardless of who’s going out there,” Sanders said. “Because you would want the same type of respect if you were going out there.”

The second-year QB made his case on the field by completing his first eight passes and leading the offense into the end zone. His comments afterward demonstrated another part of quarterback leadership.

“We’re all out there trying to do our best and trying to serve the franchise the best way possible,” Sanders said. “We’re going out there to win games. We’re doing everything we can do."
