Patrick Mahomes Still Considers Tom Brady the Greatest Quarterback of All Time
Despite being in the league for just seven seasons, Patrick Mahomes has already piled up an incredibly impressive resume. Not only has he led his team to the Super Bowl more often than he hasn't, but he's also managed to secure three Lombardi Trophies and three Super Bowl MVP awards while putting up prolific numbers along the way. It's been a special ride for the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, who many believe is on track to eventually replace Tom Brady as the greatest of all time.
In fact, some fans have gone so far as to claim that Mahomes has already established himself as the best we've ever seen at the position.
On the flip side, It's common -- expected even -- for professional athletes to have a high opinion of themselves. You need to have some form of an ego, or confidence at the very least, to achieve success at the highest level of any profession. This is especially true in the world of professional sports.
So with so many supporters believing that Patrick Mahomes is on the verge of surpassing Brady at the GOAT, he himself must believe the same. Right?
Not necessarily.
Following the Chiefs' thrilling 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Mahomes sat down with Chris Rose and Michael Robinson on the NFL Network desk to discuss the victory. During the interview, Rose asked Mahomes if he hears the discussions suggesting he's in competition with Tom Brady to be considered the greatest of all time.
'Yeah, I hear it. To me, it's always going to be tough because Brady beat me in the Super Bowl."
Mahomes continued, "It gives me something to strive for every single day, just chasing greatness. Whenever I'm tired and I don't want to work, I know that I have to do it in order to be in moments like this."
"If you ask me that question in 15 years, I’ll see if I can get close to seven, but seven seems like a long way away still."
You've got to give it to Mahomes. Even when being enticed to proclaim his own greatness -- with his confidence at an all-time high just moments after winning his third Super Bowl MVP -- Mahomes didn't take the bait. Instead, he took the high road.
Although Patrick Mahomes will never have the opportunity to face off against Tom Brady in a Super Bowl again, at just 28 years of age, he's off to a great start when it comes to chasing Brady's 7 Super Bowl victories.
But he's still got a long way to go.
