Tampa Bay Buccaneers Pursue Legal Action Against New Orleans Saints

It looks like the longstanding rivalry between the Buccaneers and Saints may soon be heading from the football field to a court of law.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints do not like each other.

Coaches, players, fans, it doesn't matter. There is a long history of disagreements between these two NFC South rivals.

Well, it appears as though this longstanding rivalry is gaining yet another layer.

It was reported last week that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have taken legal action against the New Orleans Saints, in response to New Orleans attempting to trademark "SAINTS CHEER KREWE" for their cheerleaders.

Years ago, the Buccaneers organization introduced the term 'KREWE', in reference to their loyal fanbase. The fans themselves quickly embraced the moniker, and have referred to themselves as the Krewe ever since.

In the Twitter thread shown above, Josh Gerben, who is a trademark attorney with Gerben Law, outlines some specifics regarding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' use of their trademark "KREWE", including: It's loyalty club membership, promotion of the team, marketing services, clothing, trading cards, posters, calendars, and more.

Meanwhile in New Orleans, the term 'KREWE", is something that has informally been used since the 1800s throughout the Gulf Coast area, specifically in reference to Mardis Gras.

Although the term itself does have roots in New Orleans, the Buccaneers' are ultimately claiming that their franchise used the trademark first.

Gerber states that he would have expected this issue to be resolved outside of court. He also mentions that he doesn't see why both franchises couldn't continue to use KREWE in their "respective manners".

There is still time for a resolution to be had outside of court, but whether or not the Buccaneers and Saints are willing to take the high road, we'll just have to wait and see.
