How Each Cardinals QB Performed vs Vikings

The Arizona Cardinals QBs engineered another gritty 18-17 comeback victory against the Minnesota Vikings in their preseason finale.

The Arizona Cardinals only gave reps to two quarterbacks today, as rookie Clayton Tune got the start before David Blough came in late in the 1st half to take them the distance.

As the battle for Arizona's backup QB spot intensifies with the addition of newly-acquired QB Josh Dobbs, the Cardinals allowed Tune and Blough to make a final case for themselves.

Here's how the two backup candidates performed against Minnesota:

Clayton Tune

Tune was an efficient 9 for 12, with 85 yards and no touchdowns, with a passer rating of 94.1. He was sacked once from the blind side, resulting in a lost fumble.

Tune didn't have the flashiest stats, but performed well overall. While still nagged by some errant throws, Tune showed more signs of substantial development, dropping a couple of deep throws into tighter windows. Tune dropped a beautiful 26 yard pass to Greg Dortch, and fit a perfect ball to TE Blake Whiteheart in tight coverage.

While Tune still has a good way to go, he showed signs of the arm talent and poise needed to lead an offense throughout this preseason, and he was able to make more accurate throws against the Vikings today.

David Blough

Blough was 11 for 22, throwing for 93 yards and a touchdown. He rushed twice for 4 yards and a score, posting a passer rating of 76.5.

Blough gave a somewhat inconsistent performance. While he played the majority of the snaps and was the driving force behind another comeback offensive performance, his completion percentage was marked by some inaccurate throws. His offensive line kept him on the run early, but he was able to make some solid plays, including a deep TD heave to Davion Davis with a cover 0 blitz in his face.

Blough has been a preseason hero for the Cardinals, but it might be difficult to make a case for him to start over Clayton Tune or Josh Dobbs.

While this is clearly still Kyler Murray's job to take back when the young franchise QB returns, Arizona's backup QBs have been putting on an entertaining competition to fill in for Murray.

As of now, the job is still very much in question.
